HENNEPIN TECHNICAL COLLEGE LAUNCHES NEW LEARNING OPPORTUNITY
BROOKLYN PARK, MINN. – Hennepin Technical College is offering students in its Business program a new opportunity with the introduction of the Capstone course, which was launched with an eight-day trip to London that began May 15. HTC Instructor Jerry Mefford led the group of five students and three adults.
“It’s a new learning venue,” Mefford said in describing the Capstone course. “It’s intended to be a ‘wrap up’ course that brings the learning of students in that program to fruition and to review areas of understanding together from previous coursework.” The trip was planned through EF Tours. Some of the highlights included visits to the Tower of London, Windsor Castle, Hampton Court, Buckingham Palace, Canterbury, and a lunch, guided tour, and discussion with one of the local borough’s councilmen in Camden. While in England, the group experienced life in downtown London, using the city’s transportation systems, and experiencing the theatre, as well as the foods and customs of London.
In preparation for the trip, Mefford and the members of the group met once a month beginning in January to educate themselves on overseas travel, packing, customs and history of the U.K., as well as governmental, political, and monetary norms. The students on the trip were William Breza, Krystal Forrest, Sophanna Kith, Jen Milbrandt and Deb Zachman. Mefford is currently planning for the next trip in May of 2009. That 12-day trip, named Business in Europe, will include stops in London, Paris and Rome, with tours of a variety of highlights and prominent businesses and manufacturers in each city, as well as a lecture by a business professor in London.
