Program Description

The sweet sound of success begins at Hennepin Technical College with training as an audio production specialist.

Learn to record and mix music, narration, and sound effects in a recording studio with experienced instructors. Various productions such as music, commercials, video games, TV shows, films, and audio-visual projects utilize this training.

Courses aim to help students understand the science of acoustics and studio design, as well as develop location recording and sound design skills.

Students learn skills like live sound design, foley and sound effects, and mixing and mastering techniques in state-of-the-art facilities. They are prepared for mastering and duplication of sound to multiple audio formats, including emerging recording media.

Are you ready to succeed as a member of a professional production team? Graduates are prepared for jobs like foley artist, audio engineer, mixing engineer, music production, and sound designer.

  • Admission to Hennepin Tech
  • Concurrent enrollment in ARSP 1100, ARSP 1110, and ARSP 1130
  • 78+ on Reading Placement Test or ENGL0921

Typical entry-level positions are often competitive and may involve long hours. Candidates who strive to advance beyond entry-level status must show a great degree of creativity, motivation and persistence. Well-developed interpersonal skills are a must for success.

Entrepreneurism is alive and well in the audio field. Many engineers have secured permanent positions as a result of competent freelance work. Others have built their freelance work into successful businesses. Jobs exist in music and voice recording, location audio for video, corporate media production and live sound reinforcement. Many musicians/engineers specialize in advertising work, composing and recording exclusively for commercials and industrial clients. Relocation may be necessary to pursue your career as an audio recording specialist!
