Hennepin Technical College Faculty Honored for Exemplary Work with Students

Brooklyn Park, MN, April 20, 2017 – This Spring Semester 2017 Hennepin Technical College (HTC) faculty received regional recognition for their dedication to teaching and excellence. These are among the honors and awards the HTC faculty received this spring for their exemplary work:


Dan Ralph, Plastics Engineering Technology Program Instructor
On February 25, Plastics Engineering Technology Program instructor, Dan Ralph, was inducted into the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Upper Midwest Section Hall of Fame. With over 22,500 members from 84 different countries, SPE is the largest, most well-known plastics professional society in the world. The Hall of Fame award recognize professionals who have demonstrated their advance knowledge industry and commitment to fostering innovation. Ralph has taught at HTC for more than two decades. His comment to student success and industry knowledge is evident by Plastics Engineering Technology Program 100 % job placement rate for which Ralph leads.




Joan Bernard, Computer Careers/Information Systems Instructor
Continuing with the tradition of excellence at HTC, faculty member Joan Bernard won the coveted 2017 Minnesota State Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in Teaching on April 19. These awards recognizes and rewards faculty who have achieved exceptional professional accomplishments and encourages them in their pursuit of teaching excellence. Joan Bernard demonstrates a comment to collaborative learning to ensure students master the technical, communication, and problem-solving skills needed to be successful in careers as computer network professionals. Bernard is a Computer Careers/Information System Instructor, has a Master’s degree in Education, earned several industry credentials, and is currently pursuing a Master of Management Information Systems at Metropolitan State University. In addition to Bernard’s award, Professor Richard Oxley, interactive design video production, was a State Board of Trustees Award of Excellence in Teaching finalist.


Andy Thul, Automotive Technology Instructor
Andrew “Andy” Thul, Automotive Technology instructor, has been named the 2017 Minnesota State College Student Association (MSCSA) Instructor of the Year. A statewide committee consisting of student leaders, a Student Senate Advisor and DCDA staff selects recipients annually. The MSCSA Instructor of the Year award recognizes instructors who find innovative ways to connect with their students to deliver the subject material so that students of all learning methods can succeed. Thul is faculty advisor for Skills USA at HTC’s Eden Prairie Campus, has a bachelor’s of science degree from University of Wisconsin-Stout and hold several industry certificates. Thul will be presented his award on Saturday, April 22 at 7:00pm during the MSCSA General Assembly at Breezy Point Resort in Brainerd, MN.
