BROOKLYN PARK, MN, APRIL 28, 2017 -Recognized for his strong leadership and in-depth understanding about career and technical education, Dr. Merrill Irving, Jr., Hennepin Technical College (HTC) President, has been elected to the American Association of Community College’s (AACC) Board of Directors.  He was elected by the college presidents, chancellors and CEOs from the AACC membership and was confirmed on April 22, 2017.  Dr. Irving will begin serving his three-year term as an Institutional Representative on July 1, 2017.

AACC represents the nation’s community, technical and comprehensive colleges and yields educational and economic opportunity for more than 12 million students in attaining the American Dream. Governed by a 32-member Board of Directors, AACC is dedicated to providing access for all students to college and ultimate success.  The Board of Directors acts on behalf of the institutional members to create and redefine the vision for AACC and to ensure appropriate organizational performance.

Prior to Dr. Irving’s election to the AACC Board of Directors, he was recognized for his leadership by the Minnesota State College Student Association (MSCSA).   For his beliefs and fostering of the spirit of inclusion, compassion and general concern for students, Dr. Irving was named the 2017 MSCSA College President of the Year on Saturday, April 22 during MSCSA’s General Assembly.  The MSCSA College President of the Year award recognizes the stellar work of a college president within the 2-year colleges of the Minnesota State College University (MnSCU) system.  HTC Culinary student, Jeremiah Lanes, described Dr. Irving’s leadership style and said, “President Irving goes out of his way to interact with students.  He is respectful of students and treats us as equals.”

Dr. Irving has been the President of HTC since July 1, 2015 and has successfully served diverse learning communities, with particular emphasis on underserved and nontraditional students. At HTC, he is responsible for leading the administration, faculty and staff in fulfilling the college’s mission of providing excellence in career and technical education for employment and advancement.

Dr. Irving also serves on the Minnesota Governor's Workforce Development Board and the Young Women’s Initiative Council of Minnesota.  His national roles include the AACC Presidents Academy Executive Committee and the AACC Commission on Academic, Student and Community Development. He is also a member of the National Council for Workforce Education (NCWE), National Council on Black American Affairs (NCBAA), National Council of Continuing Education and Training (NCCET) and the American Council on Education (ACE).
