Great Lakes Career Ready Internship Program

Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation (Great Lakes) awarded Hennepin Technical College (HTC) the 2017-2018 Career Ready Internship Grant for $178,500 to expand internship opportunities for students with financial need. The grant period is from January 2, 2017 through May 31, 2018.

The initial phase (Capacity Building Period) of the Career Ready Internship Grant was from January 2, 2017 through August 31, 2017. During this time, eleven HTC students were given paid internships at various companies within their respective program area. Job related tasks ranged from teaching kids culinary skills to auditing and deploying workstations in compliance with IT standards. The internship experience was mutually beneficial for the intern and the employer, as a post-internship survey noted.

According to the survey results, employers responded positively to the experience of hosting a Career Ready Internship (CRI) grant from HTC. The intern performance on general professional skills was unanimously rated either very good or good. Employers also responded favorably to hiring CRI interns, providing wages for future internships and hosting additional CRI interns. The survey results were so positive that one employer responded, “the intern demonstrated unmatched communication (verbal and written) and customer service skills.”

Interns also reported above average results and indicated that the internship helped them professionally by strengthening their resumes, expanding their professional networks, allowing them to use job specific skills and helping them develop general professional skills. Additionally, all students rated that their problem solving, communication, work conduct, proactive behavior and multi-tasking behaviors improved, so now they were more confident in all areas.

Below is a sample selection of four CRI participants and the experience they had during their internships.
