John and Sally Turrittin Establish Endowed Scholarship at HTC

Brooklyn Park, October 1, 2020 – Hennepin Technical College (HTC) today announced the establishment of a new endowed scholarship, the John and Sally Turrittin Opportunity Scholarship.

The renewable scholarship, established through the Hennepin Technical College Foundation, will be awarded to an individual who is at least a part-time student with financial need, has at least a 2.0 GPA, and in good academic standing.

“John and Sally are helping to create a bright future for our students,” said Dr. Merrill Irving Jr., president, HTC. “Especially at a time of economic hardship for so many of our students, we are grateful for their continued commitment and generous support.”

The Turrittins have been longtime supporters of HTC and this is the second endowed scholarship they have created at the college. In 2009, they established the John and Sally Turrittin Endowed Scholarship which is awarded to landscape and horticulture students.

John is a former HTC instructor who taught in the Landscape and Horticulture program for more than two decades at the college. Currently, he serves as a member on the Board of Directors for the Hennepin Technical College Foundation.

Each year, an event honors students who have earned scholarships at the college. Over the years, John has attended these events to personally congratulate the landscaping students who received the award. He plans to meet with future recipients of the new scholarship as well.

“I know about the hard work and sacrifices our students are making to pursue an education. Our hope is that these scholarships ease the financial burden for students. We believe strongly in the mission of HTC,” said John Turrittin.

The Turrittins are inspired to create pathways to economic mobility for people in need. At HTC, most students are from underrepresented communities.

“There is tremendous need. We know that scholarships at HTC change lives and we’ve seen the impact of how that helps our entire community,” said Sally Turrittin.
