Brooklyn Park, April 22, 2021 – Hennepin Technical College (HTC) is launching a new Baking and Pastry Entrepreneur degree and certificates beginning fall semester 2021. The college is the only institution of higher learning in Minnesota State to offer an associate degree in this field.

Using state-of-the art equipment in two commercial kitchens at HTC, students gain extensive hands-on experience in baking bread, pastries, confections, cakes and desserts. Students also learn business principals including marketing, both traditional and digital, as well as small business operation.

“We are excited to offer an entrepreneurship focus and believe it is truly unique in culinary education,” said Mark Johnson, academic dean, HTC. “We are responding to our culinary students who have been requesting a program that will equip them to start and succeed as small business owners.”

The curriculum reflects the changing culinary industry and equips students with in-demand skills. In an advanced baking class, students will create products that address health and dietary concerns such as gluten-free desserts.

Earning an associate in applied science (AAS) Baking and Pastry Entrepreneur degree requires two years. For those who prefer a fast-track, students may earn a certificate which provides culinary-only skills and may be completed in as few as eight months.

HTC’s new Baking and Pastry curriculum represent an exceptional expansion to HTC’s Culinary Arts program which is ranked in the top 20 nationally on GradReport’s Best Colleges 2021.

Scholarships and financial aid are available.
