BASIC MICROSCOPE TRAINING

This training is intended for anyone that needs to understand the basics of operating a microscope to correctly measure objects of different sizes. After completing this training you will understand the relationships between the different magnification systems in a microscope, identify the connection between object size and image size, and learn how to use the eyepiece reticle scale to determine the absolute dimension of an object being viewed under different magnifications. You will also learn how to assume the correct ergonomic posture that will minimize physical stress to your body when making microscope measurements for an extended period.

The following objectives will be addressed in this training:

  • Identify the essential features of different types of microscopes in common use today
  • Recognize the basic components and functions of a Compound Microscope
  • Explain the process of magnification in a Compound Microscope
  • Operate the different lens systems to precisely focus an object under a Compound Microscope
  • Demonstrate the correct ergonomic sitting posture when operating a microscope
  • Use the diopter adjustment to precisely focus an object under a microscope
  • Explain the relationship between image size and object size in a microscope
  • Use the eyepiece reticle scale to measure the absolute dimension of an object under a microscope
