Handshake is the place where students find jobs and get hired.
Here are five steps you can take to jump-start your Handshake experience!
Don’t try to do it all in one day! Instead, kick off your career future with a simple challenge, spread out into small steps over 10 days. That means less than two weeks to full Handshake mastery!
We can’t wait to help you find your next job, internship, or professional opportunity!
You’ll likely want to have a public resume available in Handshake for employers and the Career Development Services team to see.
Did you know that you can upload your resume and your Handshake profile will auto-pull tons of information? Save yourself the effort of writing information multiple times; upload your resume before adding anything else to your profile! Then you’ll only have to fill in any blanks.
To learn more about how to upload a document, refer to How to Upload a New Document. Once you’ve uploaded a resume, you can use it to fill in your profile — refer to Build Profile from Resume for more information.
There will be details in your profile that has been pre-loaded based on information from your student record. Check to be sure all pre-loaded information is correct, especially your major and GPA (if included); if you find any errors, contact SLCD@HennepinTech.edu to correct it, as Handshake is unable to change any of your profile data.
Add any volunteering, internships, or work that you’ve already completed to your profile. This allows prospective employers to see your previous (or current) responsibilities.
Pull up your academic record and fill out specific courses, skills, and talents that could be relevant to your future career. This will help give prospective employers a better idea of the special stuff you have to offer their organization!
This isn’t a must for landing a job, but a photo can help put a face to your name — this is particularly useful if you’ve made a connection with a recruiter on campus at a career fair or event.
For more information on filling out your profile, refer to How to Drive Profile Completion.
Use your home page, the top search bar, and filters to look for companies and jobs you’re interested in learning more about or applying to. Remember, you can always save your searches in Handshake, so finding relevant employers and jobs will be easy.
That means selecting desired locations where you’d like to work, preferred job roles, and your ideal job type: part-time, full-time, internship, or on-campus
When you follow an employer or a job, you can begin filtering based on companies you follow. You’ll also receive alerts when the job application window is closing or when an employer is attending an event or fair.
Explore different organizations and companies on Handshake and follow them for updates. Often, recruiters check who is following them — it can help you get on their radar and ensure you get first alerts for new opportunities!
Use Handshake to build connections by messaging peers. Reach out to alumni from your school, people who have previously held internships you’re interested in, and more.
There are so many knowledgeable folks on Handshake — hit them with some of your questions about specific career paths, organizations, or opportunities!
This is self explanatory. Now that you’re a Handshake super-user, make sure to apply for jobs and internships!
We have developed a way for your to attend career fairs virtually so you can meet interesting companies looking to hire students like you.
Schools are able to host virtual fairs in Handshake, and employers can register similarly to in-person fairs. Once the employer’s registration is approved by the school, employers are able to generate session schedules for representatives that will be present.
Employers are able to host two types of sessions to interact with students:
1. Group Sessions: 30 minutes each
2. 1:1 Sessions:
In these sessions, employers will be identified as the Host, and they will be able to share their screen with participants.
Navigate to the Events page (via the top menu bar) in Handshake, then use the Virtual filter to identify virtual fairs.
You can click on All Filters, then uncheck Only posted by my school to discover any fairs hosted by other schools.
If you identify a fair or event you’d like to save to review later, click the bookmark icon to the far right of the name to save it. Use the Saved filter on this page to locate your saved events and fairs.
Click the fair name to load the fair’s overview page and review available sessions.
From the overview page, click on the Available Sessions tab to review and sign up for sessions.
For details on this process, please see Signing Up for & Managing Virtual Fair Sessions.
To sign up for Group or 1:1 sessions, you may be prompted to update your profile privacy setting. We recommend using Community to make the most of your Handshake experience, as this will allow you to participate in all fair sessions and engage with other students/alumni!
For more information on profile privacy, please see Profile Privacy Options in Handshake.
Review which employers are attending the fair (follow employers you want to check back in with)!
You’ll be able to sign up for sessions at any point, even during the fair (as long as the session hasn’t ended).

All sessions will have the option for Handshake video, audio and text-based chat. There is no customization for types of interaction; it is up to the employer and student joining the session to determine how they would like to connect.
See details on day-of participation in Participating in a Virtual Fair.
As long as you’re signed up for the session successfully, you’ll be able to join up to 5 minutes prior to the session start and throughout the duration of the session.
We want you to feel as safe as possible while attending virtual fairs and interacting with employers, so we’ve taken several steps to ensure your safety. Read more about these steps in Reporting an Issue at a Virtual Fair.

Thank you for considering tabling on campus at Hennepin Technical College. As noted in the Hennepin Tech policy 6HTC1.1: scheduled use of a particular area of campus supersedes any unscheduled use, even when scheduling is not a requirement for a particular campus facility.
Individuals or groups approved to use a particular area or facility on campus will be given confirmation identifying the time, date, and location of the use of Hennepin Tech facilities. Approved users should have confirmation available for inspection at the time of the use of the facilities.
Individuals, groups, and organizations who wish to use Hennepin Tech facilities should provide sufficient notice of a desired use. For internal organizations, three days notice is preferred and for outside organizations 2 weeks notice is preferred. Some requests may require additional notice.
On campus tabling guests are provided a 6 foot table with black tablecloth, and two chairs in a common area of college for the duration of their visit.
Any additional needs or requests should be made via email to slcd@hennepintech.edu with at least 10 days’ notice. The message must include the exact phrase [Tabling Request] in the subject of the email in addition to any other desired text.
If you would like help with your resume or any other career resources, please book an appointment or email one of our staff. We can work with you in person or virtually, including evening appointments, as available.
