2014 BERM PRESS RELEASE
HENNEPIN TECHNICAL COLLEGE TO HOST 2ND ANNUAL
BUSINESS EMERGENCY & RISK MANAGEMENT
EDEN PRAIRIE, MINN.– Minnesota's leading business continuity and safety professionals will share their insights and best practices at the 2nd Annual Business & Emergency Risk Management (BERM) Conference, on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at Hennepin Technical College in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.
BERM was developed in response to the business community’s request that we develop a focused conference as an extension of the Minnesota Symposium of Terrorism and Emergency Preparedness (M-STEP) conference, now entering its 13th year.
"BERM is a unique conference, because it addresses a universal business concern - risk management”, said Mike Colestock, Associate Dean for Public and Emergency Services Careers. "It also allows business people to meet and share what they know. We’ve been very fortunate with this conference; some of Minnesota’s largest employers have shared their best practices in risk management and business continuity with companies that don’t normally have access to that level of expertise. As the conference has grown, we’ve seen more and more organizations step up to offer their support and that’s a wonderful statement about Minnesota’s business leaders and safety professionals.”
The one-day conference will include national and local speakers and informative breakout sessions focused on risk management areas of concern for both large and small businesses and organizations. BERM attendees will be gaining insight into the topics of emergency management, crisis communications, and strategic planning, along with developing strategies to effectively partner with emergency responders.
This year, BERM is proud to include Michael Hingson, 9/11 survivor, New York Times best-selling author and international lecturer, as a featured keynote speaker. Michael, blind since birth, survived the 9/11 attacks with the help of his guide dog, Roselle. In his presentation, "The Power of Trust and Teamwork" Michael will share his unique 9/11 survival story and the lessons learned of trust, courage, heroism and the power of teamwork.
Additional presentations will cover topics such as "Crisis Communications and Social Media in an Emergency", "De-escalating Techniques for Employers and Customers", and "5 Fatal Disaster Plan Blunders Small Businesses Make". Also new this year - the conference offers breakout sessions, so attendees may choose presentations topics that best pertain to their businesses’ unique needs and concerns.
