TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I have come to teaching after six years working as a journalist for Minnesota Public Radio, first writing and producing for a show called The Writer’s Almanac, and then for a show called Speaking of Faith.  I also reported a series of stories for a show called Weekend America, and you can read or listen to some of those stories here: http://weekendamerica.publicradio.org/archive/author_archive.php?aut_id=30299.

As an English instructor, I focus on writing as both a means of communication and critical thinking.  I believe that learning to write clearly, coherently, and compellingly is hard work, but I try to balance that hard work by making the writing assignments fun.  Whenever possible, I encourage students to write about themselves.  I have found that students tend to care more about a piece of writing when they are writing about something that matters to them, and they try harder to express their ideas effectively when they are expressing ideas about their own life experiences.
