Dental Assistant

The dental assistant is an important member of a professional health team. A dental assistant performs many duties at chairside to assist the dentist during patient treatment and then to complete patient records. The assistant must also be skilled in related office tasks and procedures including appointment scheduling and telephone communications, as well as laboratory procedures.

Dental students

A registered dental assistant is able to perform all expanded duties authorized by the MN State Board of Dentistry. Several of these duties are taking radiographs (x-rays), polishing teeth, placing pit and fissure sealant, taking impressions, performing orthodontic procedures, placing and removing of rubber dams.

Personal qualities considered essential for this occupation are the ability to work well with others, the desire to be a part of a professional team, manual dexterity, good communication skills, the ability to follow direct supervision and to be sensitive to others' needs. The Dental Assistant program is accredited by the American Dental Association, Commission on Dental Accreditation. Students are encouraged to have taken English, science, biology, and computer classes prior to or during the dental assistant program.
