Overview: Using both online and in-person learning, participants learned about the Dakota War of 1862 and the impact that reverberates to this day in Minnesota.
The Dakota Conflict
Watch the documentary film: The Dakota Conflict (56:24), which explores the causes, events and aftermath of the fierce fighting that broke out in 1862 between Minnesota's European settlers and the indigenous people of the state.
Guest Speaker: Dr. Kate Beane (Flandreau Santee Dakota and Muskogee Creek)
Watch the video presentation by Dr. Kate Beane (50:45), public historian and executive director for the Minnesota Museum of American Art. Dr. Beane recently worked with her family to champion the cause of restoring the Dakota name Bde Maka Ska [beh-DAY mah-KAH skah] from Lake Calhoun.
Offsite Visit to Hocokata Ti Cultural Center
Participants toured Hocokata Ti [ho-cho-kah-tah-tee] Cultural Center and exhibit, Mdewakanton [Mid-ah-wah-kah-ton]: Dwellers of the Spirit Lake, to gain knowledge and understanding of the Mdewakanton Dakota people and their history.

Offsite Visit to Exhibit Owning Up: Racism and Housing in Minneapolis
Participants toured Sabathani Center to view the exhibit on the history of racial housing discrimination through the stories of three black families.
