Overview
The Community Paramedic Clinician navigates and establishes systems to better serve the citizens of their communities. They help individuals and communities overcome barriers that prevent them from accessing and benefitting from health services. They serve as advocates, facilitators, liaisons, community brokers and resource coordinators. Community Paramedic Clinicians also trained as direct service providers which will ensure basic and advanced levels of care appropriate to prevention, emergencies, evaluation, triage, disease management, and basic oral and mental health.

Courses and Delivery

Didactic sessions are held synchronously via Zoom. Didactic sessions are currently being updated to include more asynchronous material. With those classes as a prerequisite, students may then complete specific clinical time according to local community needs.

History
In early 2009, Dr. Mike Wilcox and Gary Wingrove from Gold Cross Ambulance obtained a Federal Rural Health Grant to teach a “Community Paramedic” course. At the same time, a bill was working its way through the Minnesota legislature to create the designation in Minnesota, the first State in the Country to do so. Hennepin Tech was chosen to be the Institution to teach this pilot. Dr. Wilcox, Al Benney and Joe Martinez were part of the original team to teach the pilot program. Since that time, Hennepin Tech has trained over 500 Community Paramedics in nearly every state and two countries.
