HTC grad describes path into urban forestry career

Brooklyn Park, Feb. 11, 2022 – Courtney Eurich wanted to start a career that would help her support her daughter, and turned to Hennepin Technical College’s Landscape, Horticulture, Greenhouse and Urban Forestry program. Earning an associate degree requires two years, but Eurich took a different approach.

“The urban forestry is a two-year program, but I did it in about four because I had my daughter at home,” she said. It’s something she recommends to others who want to pursue a degree, but have concerns about the time commitment. “Just take your time. You don’t have to do it all at once.”

By the time she earned the degree, she’d begun work at Bartlett Tree Experts. Now a crew leader for them, she spends her days outdoors, doing everything from tree trimming and removal to planting to shrubs and ornamentals. She even climbs trees in the middle of winter to prune oaks and elms. But thanks to her education at HTC, she was prepared.

“The great thing about the program was it was very hands-on,” she said. “So I had a feel for the career that I was going to be getting into. It wasn't a big surprise when I started working.”

Besides taking her time, Eurich also recommends learning about and using HTC’s resources for students.

“There was a part of my classes that I struggled with, some of the math stuff. I did the tutoring and used the Help Center for that. Definitely use all the resources because they’re there, and everybody wants to help. Your teachers care and want to help.”
