First-Generation Student Finds Passion and Purpose in Graphic Design

Student, Jordan Vang, poses with his graphic design portfolio.

When Jordan Vang finished high school, college wasn’t part of the plan. Like many students, Jordan didn’t know how to translate his love of art into a career. But a visit to Hennepin Technical College through the TRIO Upward Bound program changed everything.

“If I’m going to be honest, I wasn’t really planning on going to college after high school. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I knew I really liked art, but I didn’t really know how I was going to make that into a major to get me into a career. I was in TRIO Upward Bound, and they did a college visit here at Hennepin Tech. I got intrigued by the Graphic Design hall, and I was hooked,” Jordan said.

The Graphic Design program at Hennepin Technical College stands out for its focus on practical skills that directly lead to career opportunities. Students like Jordan gain expertise in digital design, web development, and interactive media using state-of-the-art technology and industry-standard software. Hands-on learning is a cornerstone of the program, and faculty are known for their ability to prepare students both academically and professionally.

“Hands down, the instructors here are awesome,” Jordan explained. “They’re great in the classroom, but they make you think about things career-wise also.”

For Jordan, becoming a first-generation college student has been an empowering experience. “Being a first-generation college student is a lot. Being able to do what your parents couldn’t do, having the opportunity that they couldn’t have or they weren’t able to have. It’s inspiring. It’s empowering.”

Hennepin Technical College also prides itself on flexibility, recognizing that every student’s journey is unique. “Even though it’s designed to be a two-year program, it’s OK if it takes a little longer. Just focus and take it one thing at a time. Everyone has their journey. You’ll make it through,” Jordan shared.

This emphasis on individualized pacing allows students to balance school with other life commitments, ensuring success at their own speed. Faculty members, like Paul Howlett, recently recognized as an Outstanding Educator, reflect the college’s commitment to supporting students in their academic and professional goals.  “I think that is one thing that we do better than other schools. We accommodate where your life is coming from and we try to make it work for your education,” Howlett said.

Hennepin Technical College’s Graphic Design program offers a clear path to success for those who want to turn their creative passions into thriving careers. For more information on how you can get started, visit Graphic Design at Hennepin Tech.
