Free groceries help Hennepin Technical College students who experience food insecurity

Brooklyn Park, April 09, 2020 – Many college students experienced food insecurity prior to the COVID-19 crisis and now the problem is even greater. This week, faculty and staff at Hennepin Technical College (HTC) distributed free groceries to students who need assistance.

This exciting new initiative is called, “Foodshelf-In-A-Box at HTC.” Its’s a program provided by the Twin Cities charity, Good in the ‘Hood. Dedicated to inspiring intentional kindness, Good in the ‘Hood donated more than 1,000 pounds of non-perishable items, dairy products, frozen meat and more.

“We are grateful to Good in the ‘Hood for its partnership with HTC to address food insecurity among college students,” said Jessica Lauritsen, vice president of student affairs, HTC. “Low income students who are parents with young children and students who have lost jobs due to the coronavirus were among those who received the groceries.”

Free grocery distribution takes place each month as part of a pilot program at HTC. The college hopes to expand the program and make it available to more students in the coming months.
