Las Vegas police visit Hennepin Tech to recruit students and grads

Brooklyn Park, Oct. 13, 2022 – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department was one of several out-of-state agencies that traveled to campus recently in an effort to hire students who are enrolled in the Peace Officer and Public Safety program at Hennepin Technical College (Hennepin Tech).

At a job fair organized by Law Enforcement Opportunities and Metropolitan State University, more than 50 departments met with students and other attendees. Recruiters from police departments in Dallas, Texas and Mesa, Arizona also attended – along with a long list of departments from throughout Minnesota.

Nationwide, there is a shortage of people entering careers as police officers, sheriff’s deputies, state troopers and other licensed peace officers. As a result, departments are competing for new hires by offering a variety of perks; cash bonuses, extra vacation time, paid tuition and other benefits.

A recruiter from Las Vegas said that warmer weather and a change of scenery often attracts interest among new recruits who are considering a career in their department. Officers from Las Vegas were ready to provide employment testing to qualified applicants at the job fair.
