February is Career and Technical Education Month

Workforce student and faculty

Brooklyn Park, February 5, 2020 – Hennepin Technical College is participating (HTC) in this month’s national celebration of Career and Technical Education (CTE).

The college is hosting special events throughout February to showcase CTE programs and resources. CTE means that students are learning in-demand skills that prepare them for high-paying careers.

In the past, people were familiar with options such as the skilled trades, including welding or carpentry. Now CTE encompasses a wide range of career fields that touch nearly every sector of the economy, such as advanced manufacturing, IT, healthcare and many more.

“Our message is empowering because we describe how individuals can complete an affordable education in less time than they imagined,” said Nairobi Abrams, vice president of advancement, HTC. “A certificate, diploma or association degree prepares graduates for a successful career in their chosen field of study.”

CTE programs appeal to different types of learners, including adults seeking new careers or credentials. For high school students, graduation rates for those enrolled in CTE programs are higher than the national average, according to Advance CTE, a non-profit representing CTE educators. An estimated 12.5 million high school and college students are enrolled in CTE nationwide.

Examples of HTC’s events:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 11: An inspiring speaker, Natilie Williams, provides a presentation, “Success Starts With Me: Leadership Through Ownership." At 10 a.m., on the HTC Eden Prairie campus and at noon on the HTC Brooklyn Park campus, students will learn about resources, internships and employment opportunities.
  • Thursday, Feb. 13: The Industry Showcase at HTC’s Eden Prairie campus will introduce high school students to advanced manufacturing, audio recording, architectural technology, automotive, accounting, child development, engineering CAD, carpentry and plumbing and fire science.
  • Friday, Feb. 21: The Industry Showcase at HTC’s Brooklyn Park campus will introduce high school students to culinary, automotive, and welding.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 26 to Sunday, March 1: HTC hosts a booth at the Minneapolis Home & Garden Show at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Students and faculty will describe career opportunities in landscaping and construction trades.
