Linda Kalu: Licensed Practical Nursing

It’s an environment that feels more like a home. That’s how Linda Kalu describes Hennepin Technical College (HTC). As a student in licensed practical nursing (LPN), she’s grateful for the encouragement she receives across the campus.

“The experience that I’m having here is outstanding,” said Kalu. “This is like a family. You see people, you know them, and they care about you. That’s a place where you are at your best.”

Kalu is a representative of HTC’s Student Senate and works on the Student Experience Team, which organizes campus activities. She’s also a student leader for a club on campus, Blacks Rising in Education and Academics. While juggling academics and student life, she has a busy home life as a mom who cares for three young children.

Finding ways to reduce debt

Kalu is looking forward to launching a career that will provide for her family. Her long-term plan starts at HTC. Typically, training for an LPN requires a year of study. That’s a timeframe that appeals to many students who are eager to enter the workforce.

Eventually Kalu hopes to earn Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). In an effort to avoid student loan debt, she’s starting her education at HTC, which offers among the lowest tuition in the state. Tuition and fees for a full-time student for one year is approximately $5,380.

Making her degree even more affordable, Kalu has received two scholarships. A statewide organization for college students, LeadMN, selected Kalu to receive the scholarships because of her active role on campus.

A career that gives back

The job outlook for LPNs is strong. Projected job growth is 12.3% in Minnesota[1], which is a significantly higher rate than other job categories. Job security is an important factor for Kalu and so is job satisfaction. She plans to work in geriatrics because of the tremendous satisfaction she receives when caring for elderly patients.

“That’s what brought me into nursing. I can’t solve all problems or offer a cure but I can take care of my patients. No matter what they are going through, I will share with them my passion to help those around me,” said Kalu.
